Erie Malleable: Lessons Learned

Why would anyone pursue a career in an industry that is known for heat, sweat, smoke and dirt? A simple answer would be “money”.  My parents always insisted that we (all nine of us) should work. We were never encouraged to go on after high school for further education as both of them left school at an early age.  The one thing I can say about all nine siblings there were no slackers.

Now let’s move on to the first day of employment.  After sitting on the deacons bench outside of the personnel for every morning for a solid week we were hired.  We meaning myself and a buddy who went by the handle of  “Bud”.  It was mid morning and after going through indoctrination we were put to work.  It just seemed like minutes till we were interrupted with a shrill whistle for lunch.  Neither Bud nor I were prepared for lunch because we didn’t think we would be put on the job so soon.  As we stood there just contemplating what to do a seasoned employee approached us.  “You boys bring any lunch?” No sir.  “Well my wife packed me a large lunch and there’s enough for both of you.  I haven’t been feeling right this morning and my stomach is up set. My lunch pail is sitting over on top of the time office, just help yourself.”  Bud said “Let’s go I’m starving “ then proceeded to open the large tin lunch pail while sitting on the bench next to me.  “Wow look at all this” grab some.  “No, I don’t like eating other people’s food.”  The words were no sooner out of my mouth when I noticed this rather mean looking individual standing over us. “What are you doing?”.  “Eating lunch” Bud answered.  “ I see that”, grunted the grouch, “but why you eat my lunch”.  Just then two light bulbs came on at the same time.  We had been set up but good.
